IEP Basics Workshop on Oct. 22
PIC will host an IEP Basics Workshop in conjunction with its Birthday Party on Oct. 22.  Families who wish to sign up for this workshop should arrive for dinner at 5:30, and special activities for children and accompanying adults will take place while the parent attends the workshop. Upcoming Task Force Meetings Next Week
The Autism Education Task Force is meeting on Oct. 21, 10 a.m. to noon at Legislative Hall, 2nd Floor Hearing Room, 411 Legislative Avenue, Dover.  The IEP Improvement Task Force is meeting on October 23, 4:30 p.m., at the Collette Center, 35 Commerce Way, Dover, with videoconferencing of the meeting available at the Carvel Building, 820 N. Easter Seals Technology Resource Fair Oct. 25
Easter Seals will host a Resource and Information Fair on Oct. 25, 9:30 to 1 p.m., at Easter Seals, 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle.  The event will feature technology that can improve individuals with disabilities' quality of life.  Learn more HERE.

Artfest on Oct. 25
The Center for Disabilities Studies will host Artfest on Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,at the New Castle County Absalom Jones Community Center, 310 Kiamensi Rd., Newport.  Artfest offers people with disabilities access to adaptive art tools and supportive volunteers who are eager to help them tap and develop their “inner artist.” Learn more HERE.

Environmental Outpost Hosts Exploration on Catapults on Oct. 18
Parent and child (or children) teams will learn the history of catapults, make and take their own working Agilent catapult, and compete in the catapult targeting challenge at the Environmental Outpost, 585 Big Oak Road, Smyrna on Oct. 18, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. 585 Big Oak Road, Smyrna. Federation of Families Information Session on Oct. 27, Nov. 24
Delaware Family Voices will host workshops on Oct. 27 and Nov. 24, 6-7:30 p.m. to develop a parent-run organization for families of children with severe emotional, behavioral, and/or mental health challenges. Delaware Transition Conference on Oct. 31
The annual Transition Conference is scheduled for Oct. 31, 8 a.m. to 3:15, at Dover Downs.  Keynote speakers are self-advocate Chris Mielo, who has lived by the motto “Never say I can’t”, and Chaz Kellem, the Manager of Diversity Initiatives with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Learn more HERE.

Push to Limit Federal Test Mandates Gains Steam
Proposals to cut down on the number of assessments of students include fairly dramatic departures from the NCLB regime, such as legislation in Congress backed by teachers' unions that would allow states to give summative tests in math and English/language arts only in certain grade spans. They also include more-limited, deliberately constructed approaches taking shape in individual states.  Read more HERE.

Delaware Latino Summit on November 13

UD's Center for Conflict Resolution Hosts IEP Facilitation Workshop Nov. 19, 20
The University of Delaware's Center for Conflict Resolution will host a workshop on Nov. 19 and 20 to train IEP Facilitators.  it is highly recommended that trainees be familiar with the IEP meeting process in their particular state in a cross-section of meetings—from the initial identification and evaluation through annual review, including transition, behavior,and discipline. Literature Review of Five Federal Systems Serving Transition Age Youth with Disabilities Released
