Parent Information Center is currently looking for a part-time Transition Coordinator.

Classification: Part -time 15-20 hours/week                                   Employment Type: At-will Overview

The Parent Information Center of Delaware (PIC) is a statewide non-profit organization with a mission to advance effective parent and youth engagement in education.  The Transition Associate will work with transition-aged youth with disabilities, ages 14 to 26, to increase their understanding of self-advocacy and future planning as it relates to the special education process and subsequent college and career readiness.

 

The Parent Information Center (PIC) offers the following services to parents and youth self-­ advocates:

  • Information about laws, rules, and regulations governing the rights of children and youth with cognitive, physical, emotional, and learning disabilities to receive a free and appropriate public education and related
  • Information about best practices when teaching and parenting children with disabilities and special
  • Education and training for both parents and youth of effective strategies for coping, resolving conflicts, and acquiring life-long advocacy

 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide direct advocacy and support to parents and youth with special needs to families in New Castle – Kent and Sussex County.
  • Serves as an intermediary between the school system and parents seeking to advocate for improvement in their children’s
  • Coordination and facilitation of discussions and workshops that focuses on leadership development, education, community living, and transition planning topics in New Castle-Kent and Sussex Counties
  • Assist in the development of pertinent and culturally-sensitive training and information materials, including but not limited to videos, social media, and other tools effective in outreach to
  • Attending school meetings with youth for support, information, and
  • Identify, recruit, and secure resources to support young people with
  • Responsible for data collection related to the youth
  • Representing the interests of youth with special needs on appropriate councils and
  • Devise and implement outreach strategies for reaching culturally and racially diverse

 

Education:

A Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s Degree, or High School Diploma PLUS a minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children, youth, and families in a community-based setting

 

Requirements:

  • Personal experience or familiarity with special
  • Leadership experience with
  • Knowledge of Delaware special education laws, regulations or personal experience with special
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize
  • Excellent interpersonal and intrapersonal
  • Teaching and training skills as applicable to youth and adult learners
  • Intermediate knowledge of standard software applications (including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work some evenings and
  • Strong organizational skills, active listener, and community-building skills.
  • Must be willing and able to work
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be flexible, creative, and
  • Must be a self-starter.

 

Preferences:

  • Bilingual in Spanish or other
  • Case management experience.
  • Individual with a disability and who has youth self-advocacy
  • Strong community
  • Experience in working with youth in a detention center setting.

 

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
